Is the Church on the Wrong Side of History?

Merry Catholic wonders:

A recurring claim these days is that the Catholic Church is on the wrong side of history. This accusation makes for good sound bites, and it helps talk show pundits appear clever when they use the phrase while complaining that the Catholic Church is resisting the latest social fad, but what does the term actually mean? Saying that someone is on the wrong side of history is essentially saying, “I can predict the future. And I predict your viewpoint will be thoroughly discredited by future generations. Therefore, you might as well change your mind right now and avoid the embarrassment.” That’s a pretty bold claim, isn’t it? It takes a lot of brass for a person to declare that his views are so correct, people in the future will unanimously agree with him.
