Gov. Jerry Brown Signs Bills Allowing Nurses and Midwives to Perform Abortions

Back into the back alley:

California Governor Jerry Brown has signed two bills allowing non-physicians to perform abortions and reducing health standards for abortion facilities, saying the new laws “support the health and well-being of women.” California is the fifth state to allow or not explicitly ban the practice of non-physician abortion, joining Montana, New York, Oregon, and Vermont.

I can assume most comments, so I offer a different angle. Shouldn't MDs be very upset about encroachment in their discipline. Their turf, so to speak? They usually are. I wonder if the absence of much commentary by the AMA and physicians on this is because they are glad to be rid of it. I hear a lot about how MDs actually disapprove of being forced to perform or be involved in abortions for training purposes in med school. Maybe this speaks loud about some deeper issues. I don't know. But remember the fuss the AMA made about letting others prescribe meds. The his say fit heard round the world. Something to ponder.
