Exorcism or Deliverance? Some Pastoral Reflections on Assisting the Faithful who are Tormented by Demons There is wide interest today in the topic of exorcism. The publication a couple of years of the The Rite: The Making of a Modern Exorcist by Matt Baglio, and the subsequent movie and interviews with Fr. Gary Thomas have sparked some of this interest. Prior to this other books such as An Exorcist Tells His Story by Fr. Gabriel Amorth and other such books had paved the way for the renewed interest.

this has been so sadly lacking in the modern American church. I remember seeing a 15th century painting titled "the Exorcism of Paris" and it showed a bunch of bishops and priests praying together, and demons fleeing the city. In my own life I was fortunate enough to participate in one exorcism of the secondary rite: exorcism of spirits. So much good came from it,besides my own faith getting re-activated, the whole city seemed to breathe a sigh of relief and become regenerated and renewed. But, sadly, in my diocese now (Newark, NJ) requests for exorcism are not accepted - and I thought each diocese was supposed to have an exorcist...what up wid dat?
