We’ve heard it repeated so many times in various ways in recent years: “I’m spiritual, but not religious.” It’s a catchphrase that connotes the embrace of an independent, self-styled belief system that rejects or at least defies affiliation with any single organized religious institution. It has become a cultural marker of our time, one that encompasses a growing number of individuals who, ironically, tend to coalesce into a community unto themselves. There’s even a lively website for spiritual-but-not-religious persons claiming to be “your home for open-source spirituality,” displaying a homepage banner that solemnly proclaims, “All Religions Contain Some Wisdom… But No One Religion Contains All Wisdom.”
