The Heresy of President Obama

We Catholics, familiar with the political discourse in America since the beginning, and bolstered by the proud signature of Charles Carroll on the Declaration of Independence, cannot much help having political opinions. It is in our blood. The Catholic Church has seen the rise and fall of many kingdoms and empires. Considered in her own political nature, she is the longest lasting of all the empires of the world, and has seen to the grave the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Holy Roman Empire, the Napoleonic Empire, the Ottoman Empire, and the British Empire, to name a few. Each of these came with its own views, values, and ideologies. These systems ultimately failed when one or two inevitable falsehoods, corroded with time, weakened the foundations that upheld the structures of their government. With each of these collapses, we face a two-fold reaction: as citizens, we recoil in fear for our own ways of life, but as Catholics, we nod in acknowledgement of the simple truth that nothing short of Christ and His Gospel will make a suitable foundation for nations of men. The Church stands, and will remain standing, even as “the heavens…pass away with a mighty roar and the elements [are] dissolved by fire” (2 Peter 3:10).
