White House: Tax? What Tax? It's a Penalty!!!

Unbelievable:

The White House said Friday that the Obamacare insurance mandate tax is a penalty for not having insurance – a statement that directly contradicts what the Supreme Court ruled Thursday. According to press reports, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One that the penalty was not a tax but a penalty. “It's a penalty, because you have a choice. You don't have a choice to pay your taxes, right,” Carney is quoted as saying by Yahoo News. In a 5-4 ruling issued just one day before, Chief Justice John Roberts stated that the mandate was not a penalty and was, in fact, a tax.

"Roberts said that the mandate 'makes going without insurance just another thing the government taxes, like buying gasoline or earning an income.'"

OK. How can not having insurance be taxed if it's not bought/earn? Gas is bought; income in earned. I was starting to give Roberts the benefit of the doubt. Now I'm doubting my assessment with this quote (I must have missed the logic when I read the opinion).

It is taxation without representation if the human being's immortal soul is ignored and his conscience is denied freedom or religious liberty. It is a penalty if the fine is imposed because the human being chooses to reverence his Faith before his government. Either way, the tax, the fine, is unconstitutional and criminal.
Why atheists must relent. God is infinite, without beginning and without end. The Sovereign God was here first, a Sovereign God in a sovereign nation.

We need to impeach Brennan and Blackmun of Roe v. Wade posthumously.

Tax law has to originate in the House of Rep. If SCOTUS calls it a tax it's invalid. That's why the obammunist is calling it a "penalty"...like thats legal or moral. He has no constitutional right to "penalize" people, either.

I'm not sure what is so "unbelievable" about this. The Obama Admin insisted that this was a penalty rather than a tax all along and of courde are even still making this claim in spite of the court's ruling. What did anyone honestly expect? Going forward, liberal lawmakers will NOT be dissuaded from crafting similar measures, as they can just do what the White House is doing now: ignore what was said in this ruling, lie, and just tell the public that such measures are not taxes. And much of the public will still buy this and/or won't care. No one who is truly thinking clearly and reasonably will expect any other result.

This just goes to show that Roberts was sorely mistaken if he thought that he would actually limit further government intrusion, that this would set a good precedent going forward, or that anything beneficial would be achieved by him ruling this way and using this reasoning. It also goes to show just how pathetically naive some Repubs and conservatives are who are desperately trying to argue that there is some merit or "silver lining" in this ruling. There isn't, for the reasons noted above among others. Bottom line: this was nothing but a gigantic loss for America. Accept the truth.
