Obama Tearing Catholics Apart

American Thinker has more on what the politics of division is doing to Catholics:

What is a liberal Catholic -- and especially a minority liberal Catholic -- to do? Personal corporeal subdivision is just not an option, and even if it were, which parts would be minority, which liberal, and which Catholic? Alas, the challenges to the integrated human posed by the president's dehumanizing and divisive class/race/gender/religious warfare!

Obama Attacks Romney Donors...Publicly

The new enemies list:

Try this thought experiment: You decide to donate money to Mitt Romney. You want change in the Oval Office, so you engage in your democratic right to send a check. Several days later, President Barack Obama, the most powerful man on the planet, singles you out by name. His campaign brands you a Romney donor, shames you for "betting against America," and accuses you of having a "less-than-reputable" record. The message from the man who controls the Justice Department (which can indict you), the SEC (which can fine you), and the IRS (which can audit you), is clear: You made a mistake donating that money. Are you worried?

A Bad Night for Planned Parenthood

Marjorie Dannesghdhfesgsgagaelder of the SBA List writes that Big Abortion had a rought night last night. And yeah, I spelled her name that way because it's way too long a name to memorize. Maybe we'll just call her "Planned Parenthood's nightmare." I can spell that.

An untold story today following yesterday’s Pennsylvania primaries is what a bad, bad night it was for Planned Parenthood. In Pennsylvania’s 134th House district, they spent an eye-popping $100,000 on a TV ad campaign trying to sink the candidacy of Republican Ryan Mackenzie by linking him to ultrasound legislation that was before the legislature.

Paul Ryan: The Immorality Of Debt

The Catholic Church offers a rich overview of its thought, summarized in the Compendium of Social Doctrine, to guide Catholics in bringing truth to society’s problems. In his introduction, Cardinal Renato Martino, then president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, wrote, “This area belongs in a particular way” to those lay faithful who are active “in the social sector.”

As a congressman and Catholic layman, I am persuaded that Catholic social truths are in accord with the “self-evident truths” our Founders bequeathed to us in the founding ideas of America: independence, limited government and the dignity and freedom of every human person.

Return Of The Rottweiler?

WASHINGTON — As Pope Benedict XVI marked his seventh anniversary as pope on Thursday (April 19), many Catholics were wondering if the pontiff is finally becoming the papal enforcer that some feared — and others hoped — he would be when he was elected to lead the church in 2005.

The questions were prompted by this week’s announcement that Benedict had signed off on a crackdown on the organization representing most of the 57,000 nuns in the United States, saying that the group was not speaking out strongly enough against gay marriage, abortion and women’s ordination.

Why You Shouldn't Respect the LA Times

David French writes about when the LA Times decides to show restraint and when it doesn't. It tells you all you need to know about the LA Times:

If there’s one thing that’s utterly predictable during the course of our war, it’s that major journalistic outlets will publish stories that shame our troops or place them at greater risk — but only after very public (and comically insincere) hand-wringing. I wonder . . . if any Afghan soldiers turn their weapons on their American allies as a reprisal, will the Times editors at least send flowers to the families of the fallen? Perhaps a card? “We’re sincerely sorry that our journalistic ‘ethics’ led to the death of your husband/wife/son/daughter, but there was a vital need to cast our war effort in a negative light. After all, the New York Times leads us in Pulitzers at the moment, and nothing says ‘Pulitzer’ like exposing two-years-old wrongdoing by privates.”

I Hate the Garter Toss at Weddings Too

My wife an I didn't do it. It just seemed inappropriate to us.

On Holy Thursday, I watched our bishop wash the feet of twelve individuals, just as Jesus washed the feet of his disciples on the night he was betrayed. Regardless of status or stature, a person washing the feet of another looks humbled. The shoulders are hunched, the back is bent, and the person doing the washing is on their knees on the bare ground, a position of complete humility.

It is springtime, and weddings are aplenty. One of the traditions performed at many weddings is the garter toss. I find it to be utterly revolting tradition which involves removing an undergarment from the bride and tossing it to a pack of lustful bachelors only to end up hanging on a rear-view mirror as a trophy of degradation.

Did Anti-Catholicism Sink the Titanic?

And to think, all these years we were blaming the iceberg. I gotta' admit, here's a story I had abolsutely no idea about before I read this. really interesting:

Divine intervention has long been a blamed by some for playing a role in the sinking of the Titanic during its maiden voyage in 1912.

Harland and Wolff, the East Belfast shipyard where the ship was manufactured, was notorious for not hiring Catholics. In the 1900’s the workforce was entirely Protestant and virulently anti -Catholic.

“At Harland and Wolff it was not unknown for workers to paint on the sides of ships under construction the words “NO POPE” in letters ten feet high or more,” writes naval historian David Allen Butler.

LarryD Doesn't Like Patheos

Some interesting points made here by LarryD that I think are at least worth a discussion. I'm unsure where I am on this but I found it pretty interesting and made me think:

I don’t care for Patheos.

There – I’ve said it. It’s out for all to know and see. Some people already knew that, some might have guessed it, but now it’s unequivocally declared. I don’t care for it.

For the sake of the two or three out there who don’t know what a Patheos is… It’s basically a one-stop shop website of all the major world religions – including atheism, which any atheist worth his or her salt will adamantly claim that atheism is not a religion – with the goal of providing fair and balanced information about those religions. It’s a religion web portal with links that lead visitors to blogs, columns and reference materials regarding each belief system. Many of you are familiar with the Catholic bloggers publishing there, some of whom include Mark Shea, the Crescat, Marc Barnes and Fr Longenecker, to name a few.

So what’s not to like, right?

Several things, in my opinion.

Do Ecumenical Councils Eliminate the Need for a Pope?

Shameless Popery reports:

A friend asked me about an argument against Catholicism raised by Fr. Viktor Potapov, an Orthodox priest based here in D.C., in Chapter Ten of his Orthodoxy and Heterodoxy. The argument essentially says that the early Church believed in conciliar infallibility, but that the West replaced this idea with papal infallibility. Fr. Potapov first explains that, “since the opinion of the whole Church is made manifest at Ecumenical Councils, the Ecumenical Councils are the infallible custodians and interpreters of Divine Revelation.” Catholics agree with this, but Fr. Potapov claims that papal infallibility undermines this idea:

Ben Linus on St. Thomas' Faith and Doubt

This is why I loved Lost.

Since this Sunday’s Gospel reading tells the story of St. Thomas doubting the resurrection of Jesus until he can personally see Him and place his hands in Jesus’s wounds, I’m posting a great scene from the TV series “Lost” which dealt with issues of faith and doubt better than any other show (in my humble opinion). The scene takes place in a church, and is motivated by Caravaggio’s painting, “The Incredulity of St. Thomas” which depicts Thomas putting his finger in the pierced side of the resurrected Jesus.

Ben Linus (Emmy winner Michael Emerson who currently stars on “Person of Interest”) is one of the show’s primary villains at this point and seems to be irredeemable. However, he does believe that there is a power greater than himself at work on the island where the characters have been living. In fact, he believes this power has some cosmic significance for the whole world. It’s the one area of Ben’s life in which he appears somewhat humbled, though he tends to justify his sins by thinking they’re purpose is for the greater good.

Faces of the American Holocaust

Who knew Jerry Brown spent time with Mother Teresa and swore off abortion, before he understood it would hurt his political chances with the Democratic Party.

When the killing of human beings becomes a pre-meditated methodical policy -- put forward as a public good -- massive slaughter results, and can be called a “holocaust.”

History puts a face on leaders who considered mass murder a political “good” -- leaders like Adolph Hitler of Germany, Mehmet Talaat of Turkey, Pol Pot of Cambodia, Mao of China and Joseph Stalin of Russia.

But what about American leaders responsible for our own ongoing holocaust: abortion? History has yet to put a face to them, but those who value the sanctity of human life are obligated to ferret them out and hold them responsible. This is the latest in a California Catholic Daily’s series, “Faces of the American Holocaust,” in which we put faces to those behind the mass murder of innocents in the U.S.

Students, Alumni Urge Catholic College to Cancel Drag Show

I have to admit that while this story depresses the heck out of me, speaking with the student who's leading a rosary outside the administration approved "drag show" gives me great hope.

Stuart Weiss was a quiet non-practicing Catholic when he entered the University of San Diego four years ago, but with a desire to learn more about the faith, he declared as a theology major. Through the classwork and his own reading, he soon became convinced of the truth of the Catholic Faith and is now considering entering the seminary after graduation.

But the more classes he took at USD, the more he became convinced that many of his theology classes distorted, mangled or simply ignored Church teaching. “It just broke my heart,” Weiss told The Cardinal Newman Society. But he says he didn’t stand up in class for Church teaching. He stayed silent.

In fact, it so disturbed him that Weiss switched his major from theology to philosophy.

But Wednesday night, Weiss will be silent no more. He will publicly pray the rosary outside an administration-approved “educational” drag show for students that The Cardinal Newman Society reported on last week.

Italy: "Mosques Springing up like Mushrooms"

This is nothing short of a disaster. With Italians refusing to move out of Mom's house, get married and have children, they're allowing a mass influx of Muslim immigrants to support the economy. And then they complain that they're seeing mosques.

More than 250 mosques across Italy have reached an agreement to create a new umbrella organization, the Italian Islamic Confederation (CII).

The CII will be controlled by Morocco, and will compete with an existing Muslim umbrella organization, the Union of Islamic Communities and Organizations in Italy (UCOII).

The UCOII, which is estimated to control 60% of the mosques in Italy, is closely tied to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Since its founding in 1990, the UCOII has used its virtual monopoly over the mosques in Italy to spread its Islamist ideology over the 1.5 million Muslims in the country. The UCOII has also worked to become the main interlocutor between the Muslim community and the Italian state.

But the Italian government has ruled out reaching an agreement with the UCOII because of its links to the Muslim Brotherhood. "There can be no accords with those like the UCOII, who de facto deny the existence of the state of Israel and hold ambiguous positions on terrorism at the national and local level," according to Andrea Ronchi, Italy's former Minister for Community Policy.

After it came to light that the majority of the mosques in Italy are controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood, Italian Interior Minister Roberto Maroni called for a moratorium on the building of new mosques until a new national law could be written to regulate the phenomenon.

According to Manes Bernardini, a politician with the Northern League in Bologna, "Mosques are springing up like mushrooms, and mayors can do nothing about it because there is no national law to regulate the proliferation of these structures."
