How Many Genders Are There?

Kids being taught hogwash. Again. Pundette has the story:

A little pop quiz for you (and take care -- it's trickier than it seems):

How many sexes are there?

If you answered "two" (as in male and female) you're a hopeless old fogey. The correct, up-to-date answer, according to an Oakland, CA, public elementary school, is "more than two." The abolition of childhood (Steyn's phrase) continues apace.

There are three genders, masculine, feminine and neuter. I assume you are using the word gender in its correct sense - to refer to nouns.

If you are referring to sexes, there are two: male and female.

At least that's what I was taught.

Thank you! Enough of this PC use of the word "gender."

Living things don't have gender, words do.

Actually, there are also those with what are known as congenital anomalies of the genitalia, including those with intersexuality and those with disorders of sex development (DSD). They have differences between their chromosomal sex, gonadal sex, and/or phenotypic sex. They may have ambiguous genitalia, or different genitalia than was originally thought. Some chromosomal males may have a dysfunctional SRY (the sex-determining part of the Y chromosome), and therefore, may look female and be raised female. Usually the anomaly is caught in puberty, or lack thereof.

It is for these people that the "choose your own gender" ought to be allowed, but for others not so much. I think that's where the whole thing started. Then there were those who said, "Hey, they get to choose whether they want to be a boy or girl, why can't I?" I think the ones who say "why not me" are just confused, and need to have it explained to them that there are special circumstances because the others may have actually been raised as the wrong sex.
