Meausring Catholicism at Catholic Colleges

David French of Phi Beta Cons has some disturbing numbers about the state of Catholic education:
Catholic parents, you can now breathe easy. According to a new study released at the annual meeting of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, Catholic students "remain profoundly connected to their faith" during their college years. Of course, despite this profound connection Catholic college students will not only move away from the Church's teaching on abortion and same-sex marriage, they are also less likely to attend mass and less likely to pray after four years at a Catholic school...

I would be interested in CARA or someone doing a similar study that compares mandatum schools with other Catholic schools and see what comes out. Though I suspect the only people who would care are the ones who are actively seeking a mandatum school to begin with...

It's that time of year again...let's bash every college that doesn't have the mandatum. Come on people. I respect entirely those schools that do have it, and I wish more would. We have looked at many of them but they just didn't have the majors my children were looking for. (A fact, not a slam.) That being said there are colleges out there that care about the faith of our youth. Let us also not forget that parents/family do not negate faith formation responsibilities when their child goes off to school. We can't simply blame colleges for a student drifting away from the faith. True confession..my son attends one of those non-mandatums, Assumption College. They have had speakers such as Cardinal Arinze, Cardinal George, Fr. Barron, to name but a few. They speak openly and frequently about the Catholic Intellectual Tradition and the fact that they are not only responsible for the formation of minds but also of the souls of those entrusted to them. Just my two cents. Good luck to all those in the college hunt..it can be daunting!
