Why is marriage a joke only if you take it seriously?

Til death do us part? The vow would really hold true in California if a Sacramento Web designer gets his way in a movement that seems ripped from the pages of Comedy Channel writers, John Marcotte wants to put a measure on the ballot next year to ban divorce in California.

The effort is meant to be a satirical statement after California voters outlawed gay marriage in 2008, largely on the argument that a ban is needed to protect the sanctity of traditional marriage. If that's the case,then Marcotte reasons voters should have no problem banning divorce."Since California has decided to protect traditional marriage, I think it would be hypocritical of us not to sacrifice some of our own rights to protect traditional marriage even more,"the 38-year-old married father of two said.

Yeah, I know the guy is in fact a faithless, flaming liberal, but still...given the real damage no-fault divorce is doing to society, his petition struck a point.

Why not ban no-fault divorce, or just divorce with exceptions for abuse of adultery? It would level the legal playing field and discourage the easily ripped up contract we have now. Plus it would put the initiator of the divorce in the position of having to prove the marriage is dead, and perhaps that's a good thing.

Frankly, I can see myself putting up a petition, since this lib's opened the conversation.

Why not? I stand ready for the rocks!

Steve, I agree 100%. I posted on this article at my blog. It's ironic that gay-marriage advocates honed in on the real reason that we're slowly losing ground in this battle.

Well, for my part I'm going to do some research on the initiative process in Ohio, and how to practically phrase the initiative.

I may be tilting at a windmill here, but sometimes they come crashing down too!
