It never ceases to amaze me how terminology about pregnancy changes depending on whether the life growing inside is "wanted" or not. If the pregnancy is undesired then the embryo or fetus inside a woman is simply a part of her body that she can dispose of if she wants. If the pregnancy is desired, then the embryo or fetus is considered a separate organism from the mother. Case in point, this article from The Scientist about preventing miscarriage which headline proclaims that embryos and fetuses are foreigners that needs safeguarding:
